System File
Austrian / Hayek
Strong theory of liberty; weak answer for labor asymmetry.
The System Files · One Page Per Rival · No. 09
The Design: 1944 — Present- What it promised
- Liberty through spontaneous order: prices carry knowledge no planner can hold, and a society that trusts its price signals — and distrusts its planners — stays both free and fed.
- What it ran on
- Dispersed knowledge. The insight that no central mind can know what millions of prices know is the deepest single idea on this shelf, and it has never been refuted.
- What it demanded of the worker
- Acceptance — of whatever the order produces. The framework offers the worker no floor by design; a floor, in its logic, is a distortion. The worker's protection is the market's long run, and the long run does not pay rent.
- What the wallet got
- Unknowable — never implemented purely, which is why this file shares Affordism's source class. It competes on design logic, in the same boat as ours, and this file treats it as the worthiest passenger.
- Where it was honest
- This is not a rival to prosecute; it is a fork in the road. Affordism accepts Hayek's core: no central planner, no committee-set wage, knowledge dispersed. Payroll is a price signal — the most honest one a company emits. We simply refuse the fork's other tine: that the floor must be left to emerge. Ours is bolted, by ratio, and the bolt is itself information the market can read.
- The verdict
- Scored 15 of 24 — highest of the designs after ours, weakest exactly where the design chooses weakness: Freedom-from-desperation at 1.5 and Community at 1, because a system that offers no floor offers the desperate no reason to defend it. Hayek trusted the order to include everyone eventually. We put the inclusion in the order itself.

Read him — genuinely: The Road to Serfdom (1944) and the essay “The Use of Knowledge in Society” (1945), among the finest economic writing that exists. Then hold the fork in your hand: his floor emerges, ours is bolted. Same boat. Different answer to the one question the boat exists to answer.
